10IPT: Domain-Specific DSS

One of the reasons I love this course to bits (see what I did there?) is that it's so real-world. Today you're going to research the concrete uses of DSSs in the world around us.

For the questions below, consider these different domains:
  • Restaurant
  • Forensic investigation
  • Bank loan approval
  • Stock market
  • Disaster relief
And here are are the questions!
  1. Outline three specific problems or situations that would be faced by people in each area where a DSS could provide help in the decision-making process (provide one that is structured, one that is semi-structured and one that is unstructured).

  2. Describe how each of the four DSS types can be used to address these kinds of problems. (For examples of how this will work in the medical area, refer back to the article "Decision Support - a little history".

  3. Research and describe two concrete examples of DSSs used in these areas. (NB. It will be more difficult, or practically unfeasible, to find examples for some areas mentioned above. Despite this, make an effort to identify examples across the areas, and make sure that they vary in terms of their type and complexity.)
