10IPT: Dr. DSS

Year 10, we're going to pick up where we left off last term - looking at decision support systems. Today we'll be looking at one of the most interesting applications of DSS - in the medical field. Please complete the following tasks:
  1. So far in the HSC course, we have studied information processes and technology in relation to three specific kinds of systems: Databases, Communications and Multimedia. Describe examples of each of these that are used in the sphere of medicine and clinical care.

  2. Read the article, "Decision Support - a little history". Explain why DSS are particularly useful in this industry.

  3. Outline examples of CDSS that are currently in use.

  4. Evaluate the four "outstanding attributes" that define the efficacy of a CDSS in relation to how much they contribute to the system's successful use by clinical providers.

  5. Propose arguments against the widespread adoption of CDSS.

  6. The article essentially assumes that, given current trends, computer-based CDSS will become an integral part of all medical practice in the future. Predict the implications that this will have on (a) the nature of medical training and (b) the daily operations of health professionals (including therapists, general practitioners, specialists, surgeons, pharmacists, paramedics and nurses).
