10IPT: Error Checking

We all make mistakes every now and then. But when it comes to communications systems, errors are a way of life. That is why we are spending today, our third and final lesson on the physical or transmission level of the communications framework, looking at methods of error checking! 
  1. Explain why error checking and correction are required in communications systems.
  2. Parity check 
    • Outline how this method works. 
    • Distinguish between odd and even parity. 
    • What percentage of errors do you think a parity check would catch? How could you test your hypothesis? 
  3. Checksum 
    • Outline how this method works. 
    • Explain why it provides more accuracy than a parity check. 
  4. Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) 
    • Outline how this method works.
    • Explain why it provides more accuracy than a checksum.
    • Account for the fact that some communications systems still use inferior error checking methods.
