You already know the basic concept of an expert system - and how it differs from other kinds of decision support systems (i.e. spreadsheets, databases and artificial neural networks). But we haven't spent much time studying the nuts and bolts of an expert system yet. So here we go!
  1. Describe the five components of an expert system.
  2. Draw a context diagram showing the interactions between these components, making sure to label each dataflow.
  3. Contrast forward and backward chaining, with an example of each.
  4. Create a pen-and-paper design for a simple knowledge base related to a situation of your own choice. Explain how an inference engine would use forward and backward chaining on the same set of rules.
