You already know that nodes are the basic building blocks of networks. That's about as detailed as saying that cells are the basic building blocks of human bodies. We know that actually there are lots of different kinds of cells that make up the body, each with their own unique function. Red blood cells carry oxygen. Immune cells are designed to identify and kill intruders. Neurons fire electrical impulses that make up our consciousness and thought. So what are the different kinds of hardware that make up a network, and what are their functions?
  1. For the following pieces of hardware, (a) describe their role within a network and (b) outline how they function:
    • NIC
    • Cables and backbones
    • Repeaters, hubs, switches and routers
    • Bridges and gateways
    • WAP

  2. Distinguish between the different kinds of hardware with wireless capability.

  3. Evaluate the integration of WLAN technologies into medical, commercial, educational and engineering contexts.
