What is the big social and ethical issue related to multimedia? It is arguably copyright. So today's lesson will be devoted to thinking through this prickly and multi-faceted issue.
  1. In pairs, come up with your own definition of copyright and state what you think the purpose of copyright law is.

  2. Watch and summarise the points made by the following videos:
  3. Identify the ways that copyright law applies to each of the following points:
    • Content is collected from copyrighted sources with a microphone
    • JavaScript to play audio files is obtained and modified from a website with similar functions
    • Various software products are used to process the multimedia
    • Video and audio was compressed using codecs written by others

  4. Outline the amendments that have been made to the Copyright Act due to the nature of software, data and information.

  5. Discuss the ways in which copyright infringement and its countermeasures have changed in the age of digital multimedia.

  6. If you are up-to-date on our last two lessons, then you may get into your groups and prepare to submit your Round 2 articles for Monday (or you can even submit them now if you are ready!).
