9IPT: Other System Development Methods

The reason we've spent so long on the SDLC is because it's the most applicable method for the projects you'll be working on in the HSC course. But there are many ways to skin a cat, and many ways to develop an information system!
  1. Describe the traditional ("waterfall") approach and outline its most significant shortcomings. Explain why it is widely used nonetheless.
  2. Explain how the spiral and agile approaches modify the traditional approach, and outline the key benefits/disadvantages associated with each methodology.
  3. Describe outsourcing and customisation, and explain how they can be integrated into a system to bring unique advantages.
  4. Identify and describe concrete examples of systems that are uniquely suited to each of these development approaches.
  5. Select the development approach that you think would be most appropriate for your Ruse 2013 project, and justify your response with reference to (a) the characteristics that make your approach suitable and (b) the characteristics that makes the other approaches unsuitable.
