IPT: Controlling Data Flow

posted Mar 2, 2009, 6:59 PM by Eddie Woo
In busy networks, data is flying through cables and nodes thousands of times a second. Collisions are going to happen! The protocols we've looked at today are the only means to ensure that data arrives safely and completely at its destination within a network.

In a classwork post, describe (in your own words) the CSMA/CD protocol and the token ring protocol. Then, research and summarise the following alternative protocols, particularly noting their distinguishing factors:
  • CSMA/CA
  • CSMA/CARP
  • MACAW (wireless)
  • PCF (wireless)
P.S. If CSMA/CD is still a total mystery to you after the in-class explanation, then head to the Learn Networking website for a really helpful explanation of how the system works.
