Some random jazz

Time for a post that has nothing to do with anyone in particular. Some of this has been waiting for quite a while to be posted, but I figured I would gather it all together until I had a few things to say at once.

Firstly, you'll notice that I've refreshed the front page of the site. Gone is the archaic image of the previous Woo Random Files (the one that was literally just a bunch of files), and I've finally gotten together some decent icons to accentuate navigation to the main sections of the site. I hope you like them. A minor change that most people will not notice is that I slightly adjusted the width of the 'latest updates' box - from 50% of the page width to a much more comfortable 67%. This means that the post previews will no longer cause unwanted line breaks if I use long words in my introduction to a post. (If you don't understand what that means and want to, then ask me - I'm happy to explain, but I figure that most people don't care.)

Secondly, I've uploaded the transcript to the talk that I gave at ISCF earlier this term, "Hell and the God of Love?" You've been able to listen to the podcast for quite a while now, but some people prefer reading... and I like having an exhaustive archive of all the things I've produced.

Thirdly, as a bit of a test, I shot and uploaded a video on Polynomial Remainders a couple of weeks ago (apologies for those viewing in the DET - only senior students can access, but if you go home you'll be able to view it fine through your home internet connection). These are the questions where you know the remainder when P(x) is divided by (x+a), and you know the remainder when it's divided by (x+b), so what's the remainder when it's divided by (x+a)(x+b)? I shot it without a camera man, so I spend the first couple of minutes of the video out of frame... but you can see the important parts anyway, and eventually my face does appear. 8-) I know that the yearly exam is done and dusted, but some people might still be interested in learning how to solve these questions (which are notoriously tricky to understand and execute properly, especially in year 10 when everyone has forgotten how to solve them).
