Newsletter archives

I have finished replicating the newsletter articles from the 2007 news archive. The majority of the work was uneventful; however, there were two special elements that had to be taken into consideration.

Firstly, tables in Microsoft Word could not be converted to unformatted text and back without destroying the table layout (unless, of course, the final text information was to be displayed with a monospace typeface like this one, a solution that is difficult to enforce on the end user's computer and not entirely desirable due to the nature of the intranet). I therefore decided to simply re-create any tables that were present - all of which were statistics on how many awards Ruse students had receieved!

Another special element was a photograph in one of the articles. In the original Word document, it was embedded as image data, which could only be extracted as a bitmap. As JPEG compression is ideal for images, I used Microsoft Office Picture Manager to convert the extract bitmap into a JPEG file, which I attached and inserted into the relevant replica article.

I have updated the homepage image by downloading the PNG from 'Mathematics' and adjusting brightness to +20 in Microsoft Office Picture Manager. I also used this software to  re-dither the image (processing) and convert it to GIF format (organising).

The resulting file is approximately the same size as the original when transmitted via Google Sites but with more detail and a greater image resolution. It also fits in more elegantly with the white background - the old image was too dark, a problem that I did not notice while producing it on my home computer (which has a display with colour calibration problems on a hardware level).
