Class notes - the seven processes in communication systems

This is a transcript of handwritten notes dated 2009-03-19.

'Which processes are active in a communications system?' The answer to this question is that all the information processes - collecting, organising, analysing, storing and retrieving, processing, transmitting and receiving, and displaying - are actively involved in a communications system.

Collecting: the technology would need to interact with the participants, and hence collect data from the participants, which are separate entities from the system as a whole.

Organising: putting data in a more logical format .e.g encoding to MPEG H.264. This particular example of organising is relevant in communicatioon systems as it is an example of compression, which is necessary in communication systems with bandwidth restrictions (i.e. most communication systems)

Analysing: e.g. statistics of communication system usage (analysis gives meaning to data) i.e. tracking incoming ISPs, locations of cell phones within the celluar networks, and so on.

Storing and retrieving: usually temporary storage; however, this also covers network storage, which can often be a form of communication.

Processing: the ADC - analogy to digital converter - is required for collecting data. Furthermore, many networks require processing to 'translate' between one machine 'language' and another - for example, many networks have a print server. Printers print in 'printer language', requiring all print jobs to be processed so that the printer will understand what to do with the print job. See also: postscript

In general

My problem is that I got arrogant after finishing the multiple choice section, and spent too much time on the question immediately following. As a result, I ran out time.

More points needed to achieve maximum marks, although due to a misprint, this question did not lose any marks.

* 21c: 5 marks out of a possible 6
More points needed to achieve maximum marks.

** 22a: 5 marks out of a possible 7

An example is a specific situation, not a generalisation description of the type of situation situation that is likely to be encountered. "data needs to be processed for sending" could be better replaced with, "a fireman's emergency call would be compressed so that it can be send through the system quickly, without significantly increasing traffic such that other data flowing through the system is adversely affective, but the voice of the fireman could be heard by the receiver."

* 23b. 0 marks out of a possible 6
The question was not even done due to time constraints. Do not be verbose on early questions.

23c. 5 marks out of a possible 7.
More points needed to achieve maximum marks. Additional advantages that could have been mentioned include accessibility to data/information and technology from outside the local area network, ease of sharing. Additional disadvantages include reliability on external entities, and very importantly, greatly increased network traffic through the router (resulting in slower speeds, demand for a powerful router, and possibly higher internet service cost)

25a. 5 marks out of a possible 5
Full marks were achieved, but avoid the inclusion of thoughtless phrases such as, "no one uses the internet", that are utterly ridiculous and do not contribute to the answer in any positive way.
