  1. Sampling -
    • Sound is recorded at precise and regular time intervals
    • Each recording is called a sample
    • Each sample is stored seperately, just like a pixel
Factors affecting file size of a sound
  • How many samples per second
  • Bitrate -  how bits are assigned per sample
  • How many channels are there - ;Mono - one, Stereo - Two, Surround- six (usually)
Examples:
CD
- Sampling rate: 44 100 hertz
- Bitrate: 16 bit sound - 2^16
- Channels: Stereo
- Viva la Vida: 4:23 minutes - 263 seconds

    • When a computer stores info about notes - stores pitch, duration, location, volume, instrument,
    • What is it?
    • Hwat kind of sounds can it represent
